Dr.O asked:

A big share of this multi-billion dollar revenues of narcotics are deposited in the Western banking system.

But an important point is that this “illicit” trade cannot survive unless the main actors involved in narcotics have “political friends in high places.”

Revenues from the CIA sponsored Afghan drug trade are huge. The Afghan trade in opiates constitutes a large share of the worldwide annual turnover of narcotics. (Douglas Keh, Drug Money in a Changing World, Technical document No. 4, 1998, Vienna UNDCP, p. 4. See also United Nations Drug Control Program, Report of the International Narcotics Control Board for 1999, E/INCB/1999/1 United Nations, Vienna 1999, p. 49-51, and Richard Lapper, UN Fears Growth of Heroin Trade, Financial Times, 24 February 2000).

According to IMF estimates, global money laundering is between 590 billion and 1.5 trillion dollars a year, representing 2-5 percent of global GDP, a big share of global money laundering is linked to the trade in narcotics.

According to 2003 figures, drug trafficking constitutes “the third biggest global commodity in cash terms after oil and the arms trade.” (The Independent, 29 February 2004).

Hence, the above figures show that most of the revenues linked to the global trade in narcotics are not appropriated by “terrorist” organisations and warlords, as claimed by the U.S. officials and the American President

It would be more acceptable that the price of commodities really result of natural, unpredictable fluctuations on offer and demand, not on artificial factors?

Importing Foreign commodities?

thelastid asked:

I would like to import from other countries and not let others know.

Such as changing the label.
French wine would be called “Freedom wine.”
They would drink it, thinking it somehow is a good cause.

That business is intriguing, though I doubt I would do it.

I was at the Cadillac dealership yesterday looking at new cars. The dealer pushed hard to get me to lease than buy a new car. His reason: cars are depreciating commodities and there is no point investing so much money into it. I would think they would be more interested in selling cars. Any insights what is their hidden advantage in leasing cars over selling?

Seneca asked:

I know this is a stupid question, but my son has a masters in finance and he has accepted a job in Chicago as a trader. He will be trading commodities. Can anyone help his poor momma understand this. He’s tried, but he speaks in another language…I don’t get. I was an English major and not very tecnically inclined. Appreciate it.

Cities and Knights Rules clarification?

Jonathan H asked:

Ok So I have two somewhat *rare* scenarios that I didn’t find in the rules.
1. I have one knight, no other players have knights. There are no cities on the board. If the barbarians attack, do I defend Catan and get the vp or does nothing happen and the barbarian simply restart its advance?
2. Can I upgrade my city flipbook using commodities even if I don’t have a city on board? (I.E. Trading to gain commodities early)

Rja asked:

represented. We know that slaves were here and alll the horrors of the master -slave relationship. We know that a war was fought to free them. But to be accurate shold we not acknowledge that some white masters were good people and kind. Should we not also know that some free Blacks were also involved in the slave trade. Is there no documentation to say that the blacks were bought as a commodity from other blacks and transported to the New world as a commodity by shippers paid to do the transport. Do we have no evidence that there were some good ship captains who at least wished to deliver their cargo intact and in good health as the cargo was valuable. Is there no history in black literature of good crossings? Was there no black historical account of how these captured individuals would have fared if the didn’t get on the ship and stayed with their captors in Africa? All the heros of this horrible time in Black history should be acknowledged to be fair accurate.
